Late payment in collections continues to haunt Spanish carriers

A significant portion of Spanish carriers is currently afflicted by the delay in receiving payment for what they have earned through their effort.
This is warned about in numerous digital publications across the peninsula, which signal how long their clients are taking to pay what they owe, violating the Late Payment Law, which itself establishes an excessively long payment term, it’s true, with dates that postpone the moment of payment up to 60 days and more.
The site “Autónomos”, dedicated to transportation news in Spain, reflects the issue very well in an article by Benito Armero, who emphasizes that, despite the sanctioning regime against late payments being approved since the end of 2021, payment terms have only been reduced by 23 days on average, representing a 30 percent reduction in the term over these years.
And the reporter quite logically says “that it seems this year 2025 will confirm the trend in the reduction of payment terms to carriers by their clients, even though the Law allows for up to two months of delay for clients to make payments effective to carriers,” one of the most concerning issues for drivers, who are also overwhelmed by taxes, the cost of oil, tolls, and technology modernization, which eats into their final profits.
The article adds that this year has consolidated “a waiting period that hovers around the legal limit established by the Late Payment Law at 60 days, as demonstrated by the fact that last July it stood at an average of 61 days, while in the previous months of May and June, the average was, for the first time since the Law exists, within the legal terms, although right at the limit of 60 days.”
Perhaps payers are getting in line because the number of inspections is increasing, or many businesses lack the liquidity to pay immediately, but the truth is that the Late Payment Law also establishes a scale of sanctions based on the amount of the services that have not been paid.
