The General Directorate of Traffic has just activated 33 new radars on roads in eleven autonomous communities, a silent warning for those moments of distraction when your foot gets heavier than it should. Because these devices don’t just fine you: they remind, warn, and above all, focus attention where it’s most needed.
It’s not the news of the year, certainly. That the DGT installs radars no longer surprises anyone. But behind this update of the speed control map, there is a clear intention: to reach those corners of the road network where surveillance relaxes and, with it, the driver’s attention. Because it’s not just about catching offenders, but about generating a permanent deterrent effect. And these 33 new points, 20 fixed and 13 section radars, have been chosen with that precise purpose: to remind us that the rules don’t take a break just because the scenery invites complacency.
The geography of these new devices spans eleven autonomous communities, from Andalusia to Galicia, passing through the Mediterranean and the interior of the peninsula. But if we talk about concentration, Madrid and Ávila take the prize, with four new control points each. They are closely followed by Alicante and Cantabria, which are debuting three. They are very different provinces, with very different types of roads, but with a common denominator: sections where speed ceases to be a number and becomes a broken habit.
As is customary, these radars come with a four-week courtesy period. During this grace month, drivers caught exceeding the limits will not receive a fine, but an informative letter warning them of the excess committed. A kind of friendly warning before the hand becomes an iron fist of sanctions that can range from 100 to 600 euros, including point loss. A warning that, when you think about it, is almost a favor.
Because beyond the financial penalty, what these new devices pursue is something much deeper: changing driving behavior. The DGT knows it: many drivers know the location of the radars, but in certain contexts — a clear road, a familiar stretch, a moment of routine — they forget that surveillance is still there. And in that forgetfulness, scares, sudden braking, and sometimes accidents are born. These 33 new points come precisely to fill those gaps in attention.
In a country where inappropriate speed continues to be one of the recurring causes of accidents, each new radar is an uncomfortable but necessary reminder. It’s not about persecuting the driver, but about protecting them from their own carelessness. Because in the end, as road safety experts repeat time and again, what really kills is not the fine, but overconfidence. And these 33 new devices are there, in those corners where we relax the most, to prove it.
