Crucial Advice for the Professional Haulier: Don’t gamble. Insure your truck and your cargo

by Marisela Presa

To you, who earn your living on the road, we advise that you do not see insurance as a mere expense or a formality. It is, above all, your primary tool for financial protection. Limiting yourself only to compulsory third-party liability insurance while transporting valuable cargo is like playing Russian roulette with your business and personal assets.

Imagine a freak accident: a sudden brake that damages the goods, a fire, a total theft of the cargo, or an incident where you are found liable. Without a specific policy that covers the cargo (cargo insurance), you would be solely responsible for compensating your client for the full value of the loss. These are bills that can amount to hundreds of thousands of euros, which you would have to pay out of your own pocket.

The consequences of not being properly insured can be devastating. A single major claim can mean the immediate loss of your business, the forced sale of your truck and assets to cover the debt, and even bankruptcy. Your reputation would be destroyed, as no serious shipper will trust a carrier who cannot guarantee the cargo and represents such a high risk.

The foundation of your protection are the compulsory policies: Civil Liability Insurance (for damage to third parties) and Driver Accident Insurance. However, this is not enough. For the cargo, the law requires L.O.T.T. Insurance for national transport, but this only covers up to a maximum of €6/kg, an amount insufficient for valuable cargo. Therefore, the wisest advice is to complement it with All-Risk Cargo Insurance that covers the full actual value of the goods.

In today’s logistics market, being fully insured is not a luxury, but a mark of professionalism. Robust coverage is a powerful tool for competitiveness: the best clients demand these guarantees as a sign of seriousness and solvency. Therefore, good insurance is a strategic investment that opens the door to more lucrative contracts.

In short, in a context of high uncertainty, comprehensive insurance is the only certainty that will allow you to operate with peace of mind. Drive with the confidence of someone who knows their livelihood and future are safe, protected against any unforeseen event that may occur on the road. Don’t drive with the fear of someone who has everything to lose.
